And if you happen to be hiking in the Gallatin Gateway area, you can choose a trail that leads to one of Montana’s most visually stunning lakes.
To reach the trailhead, take Highway 191 south into Gallatin Canyon. Drive 20 miles to the Lava Lake trailhead parking area, just north of the Gallatin River bridge.
But although the hike is strenuous at times, it's not extraordinarily difficult.
