It seems as if summer just started in Montana, but already hints of fall are in the air. And while we welcome the arrival of autumn here in the Treasure State, that doesn’t mean we don’t want to soak up the sun while we can.
You may have had to cancel or amend some summer plans this year due to the unfortunate wildfires. If you’re going a little stir crazy, you’re in luck: There are still plenty of places you can go for a late summer getaway.
Fall in love with Fort Benton all over again (unless you've never been, in which case you'll fall for the first time). This amazing riverside community is full of local history.
Take a ride on the Charlie Russell Chew Choo dinner train, walk the trails near Crystal Lake, or take part in some of the many local events you'll find around town this time of year. Lewistown is remarkably underrated.
The Fort Peck area was not immune to wildfires this summer, but luckily they seem to be contained. Aside from the obvious - the massive Fort Peck reservoir - you'll find plenty of things to do here. The Fort Peck Summer Theatre has shows through September 3, and the Charles M. Russell Wildlife Refuge is always worth exploring.
Fill your belly with BBQ at the Thirsty Turtle and treat yourself to a tour of Big Timber, one of Montana's finest mountain towns. Don't miss the Crazy Mountain Museum, which is loaded with local history.
This quaint, historic mountain town will leave you feeling nostalgic for a simpler time. The end of summer is the perfect time to visit, especially after a drive down the beautiful Beartooth Highway.
When was the last time you enjoyed a meal at Montana's oldest restaurant (Pekin Noodle Parlor), taken photos of Our Lady of the Rockies, or explored a real life brothel museum? If it's been awhile, visit Butte as soon as possible.
Miles City remains a true Western town, and it's full of local history. Better yet, you'll find some unexpected gems here - Eastern Montana's only commercial winery, Tongue River Winery, is here.
If you need a change of scenery but you're not a "tourist town" type of person, check out Ekalaka for the weekend. Medicine Rocks State Park alone is worth the journey.
Enjoy numerous local art sculptures, visit Willies Distillery, relax at Wade Lake, take a drive down the Gravelley Range Road... Ennis may be a small town, but there's plenty to do here, especially when the weather is warm.
When you live in Montana, you’re never more than a few hours away from a beautiful weekend getaway destination. And if you only have a day, check out this list of Treasure State day trips.
