Unless you’ve recently teleported through time from centuries past, you probably don’t often order a glass of mead with your evening meal. Mead is an alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey with water and combining it with grains, spices, and fruits, the result being a seriously tasty beverage that isn’t nearly as easy to find as it once was. But if you’re curious about it, all you have to do is head to Hidden Legend Winery in Victor. They make and sell Montana-made mead, and it’s amazing.
Mead is thought to be the oldest alcoholic beverage on the planet.
It has a long history, with its oldest recorded existence being in China about 9,000 years ago. The flavor and style varies widely depending on how it was made, but at its core, it's simply fermented honey and water.
Hidden Legend Winery is owned by Ken Schultz, who always wanted to be a wine maker -- he even did his eighth grade science project on fermentation.
The natural bounty from the wilderness of the western Rocky Mountains is transformed into award-winning, world class wines. You'll see this mead at Farmers Markets, food and wine festivals, and on some grocery store shelves.
It's open Tuesday - Saturday from 11- 6. Not only is it a great way to taste the mead and figure out what you like, but you can learn more about the winemaking process and buy some great swag.
If you don't think you like wine, you might be surprised by the mead you'll try here.
