Montana is a large state, and not every attraction is easy to reach. That being said, there are some spots that are simply worth the journey. If you ever have the chance to visit the places on this list, you won’t regret it.
1. Highline Trail, Glacier National Park
The Highline Trail is not an easy trek -- it runs from the Logan Pass Visitors Center to The Loop Trail Head along the Garden Wall, totaling over 20 miles. But the scenes from the trail are so amazing, it's worth the journey if you're in decent shape.
2. Makoshika State Park
Makoshika is the largest state park in Montana, but unless you live near Glendive, it requires a lengthy drive to reach. But exploring these 11,000 acres truly feels like going back in time, especially since dinosaurs once roamed the territory.
3. The Polebridge Mercantile
Polebridge is a tiny community that's cut off from the outside world (don't expect cell service or even electricity while you're there). Bot not only is the area absolutely beautiful, but the bakery at the mercantile is unreal.
4. The Yaak
Located in the northwest corner of the state, the Yaak is a mystery to most Montanans. But if you ever get the chance to walk along the Yaak River, you'll understand why this part of the state is so underrated.
5. Wild Horse Island
Wild Horse Island is just a short boat ride from the shores of Flathead Lake... but unless you own a boat, it requires quite a bit of effort. Once you arrive, however, you might find it even harder to leave.
6. Kintla Lake Campground
Glacier National Park's Kintla Lake Campground sits on the lake with a mountainous backdrop, just 40 miles from the Canadian border. It's one of the most remote campground in the west, and it's absolutely spectacular.
7. Heart Lake
Located in the Flathead National Forest near Condon, the trail to and from Heart Lake totals 7 miles. But the lake itself is peaceful, clean, and often secluded, so it makes for a great day trip when you need to get away from it all.
Montana is such an incredible state, and we should all be exploring it as much as we can. Have you seen our ultimate Montana bucket list ?
