Montanans may not be the type to wait two hours to try a trendy new restaurant or Instagram our food (much), but that doesn’t mean we don’t love to eat. In fact, we’re fortunate to live in a state full of so many beloved family restaurants, up-and-coming eateries, and amazing farmers markets.
If you ever have any doubt that Montana is a perfect place for foodies, we’ll give you 10 good reasons to back up our claim.
1. Our local markets are full of fresh produce and handmade delicacies.
We're nearing the end of traditional farmers market season, but some, like the Helena Farmers Market, are open almost all year. Missoula even has its own Winter Market.
2. Some of our restaurants serve up a side of history.
Yesterday's Calf-A in Dell, a converted one-room schoolhouse that now serves the best pie ever, is just one example of many restaurants with character in Montana.
3. We can take this sweet little berry and turn it into all kinds of delicious things.
Huckleberry pie, muffins, cobbler, bear claws...
4. Our food festivals are awesome.
From Polson's Flathead Cherry Festival to the MSU Billings Foundation Wine & Food Festival (pictured here), there's always an event on the horizon that celebrates food in Montana.
5. Nobody does a burger like Montana does a burger.
This is the Ugly Burger from Rod's Drive-In in Havre. It might not look like much, but it's mouthwatering.
6. If you see a taco truck in Montana, you know it's going to be good.
This is Victory Taco in Bozeman, which also serves ice cream. You'll find plenty of authentic taco trucks throughout the state.
7. Believe it or not, our largest city, Billings, is being nationally recognized as a city for foodies.
It makes sense to us: 406 Kitchen & Taproom, Uberbrew, The Fieldhouse, The Burger Dive... we could go on.
8. Our Mom & Pop restaurants are warm, welcoming, and fill our bellies with home-cooked goodness.
Whitefish's Buffalo Cafe is wonderful.
9. And good luck deciding where to go out for a good, hearty breakfast in the Treasure State. It's one of the things we do best.
This is the Locavore Benedict from the Nova Cafe in Bozeman.
10. We've even got a few markets that big cities would be jealous of.
At Missoula's Market on Front, you can get local fruits and veggies, organic groceries, and a freshly made lunch.
