You might be a little dubious, but it’s true. One of the best places in the country to view fall foliage, according to Condé Nast Traveler, is right here in Montana. But be warned, it’s easy to miss.
The magazine divided the top locations between the East and West coasts and gave out superlatives like "Longest Season" and "Most Variety" to its chosen locations.
Montana was named "The Most Dramatic," with the magazine specifically citing the beautiful Glacier National Park. The park sits on the U.S.-Canada border and contains over one million acres of stunning landscape, including two subranges of the Rocky Mountains.
Glacier National Park is very popular when weather allows, and it has already broken its annual visitor record in 2016 with more than 2.7 million visitors. The fall season is very fickle here, just a brief moment between the popular summer months and the harsh winter. Blink, and you might miss it. The magazine states that the best time to visit is a short window in mid-October, but it changes every year.
One of the park's most famous features is Going-to-the-Sun-Road, but weather conditions (like the recent snowstorms) often lead to road closures within the park. If you can't take the drive, check out Flathead Lake for scenic fall views.
Before visiting the park, be sure to check status of the park roads here. If you don’t want to drive, there is a two-way shuttle that runs between the visitor centers along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
