Any time spent in Montana is great. The time of year doesn’t matter quite so much. Especially when you consider just how beautiful every landscape is. Summer and fall are big favorites among both locals and tourists, but we can’t forget about winter. For those who love colder weather with a side of snow, these trips might just be perfect, provided, of course, you bring along your favorite winter travel essentials. These winter day trips in Montana are certainly worth adding to your seasonal plans!
While not the official headquarters of Christmas here in Montana, there's a good chance Bigfork might be the unofficial center of cheer. Each year beginning in November locals come together to make the town into the most decorated town in the state. After that, there are a variety of events including the Holiday Parade Of Lights and the Wine Walk. Be sure to check it all out if you're in the area.

One of the most notable getaways in the state is lovable for a reason. Big Sky Resort is lovely any time of year, but of course, it gets most of its visitors when the slopes are full of snow. Whether you like winter activities or just prefer to sit by a fire, a day trip here might be just what you need if you're in search of cozy vibes.
Just 55 minutes by car from Missoula, Hamilton is lovely any time of year. But, visit in the winter for some seriously special views. History buffs will especially appreciate this place with a visit to the Ravalli County Museum and Historical Society.
While there are plenty of reasons to visit Whitefish any time of year, the winter season is the best to get a fun and festive taste of the town. The annual Whitefish Winter Carnival offers three days of fun, but it's just as great if you can only come for a day trip.
Beautiful and tiny Bannack was founded in 1862 when John White discovered gold on Grasshopper Creek. Things were great for a while, but when the gold dried up in the 1950s the place became a ghost town. Today it's a fascinating state park, perfect for a visit any time of year.
Missoula is a no-brainer when it comes to a fun day trip in Montana, but choosing something to do might be challenging. We recommend a winter visit which makes tea at Lake Missoula Tea Company even cozier. While you're there stop into Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers to pick up something to entertain you through a cold Montana winter.
The cute town of Butte started as a mining camp in the 1860s. And, in a lot of ways, visiting feels like stepping back in time. Be sure to walk the streets to see some of the old, historic buildings. And, for a deeper look into the town's background check out the unique Mai Wah Museum. The building used to be a noodle parlor, a vestige of the immigrant population that helped make this place so special.
Have you been on any of these winter day trips in Montana? If so, let us know what we should add to our itinerary. And, of course, if you have others we should add to the list let us know in the comments.
If your idea of a great road trip includes some seriously sweet treats you might want to try the Montana donut trail. It’s beautiful, fun, and full of our favorite dessert!
