If you love checking out bridges in Montana , then you must head over to the Natural Bridge Falls Recreation Area in the Gallatin National Forest. There you will find a footbridge over the Boulder River with stunning views of the surrounding landscape. You will also be able to see Natural Bridge Falls, which is truly a sight to behold.
The Natural Bridge Falls Recreation Area is located within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. It is about 27 miles south of Big Timber, via US 298. It is open all year, and there is open parking, although parking is limited.
For visitors who are interested in a brief hike, they should take the 0.7-mile out-and-back trail that starts at the parking lot, goes across the bridge and over the Boulder River, and then curves back around to a viewpoint along the southern part of the river.
From the bridge, you can take in the beauty and power of the Boulder River below and the stunning surrounding vistas.
For visitors who prefer a shorter hike, head to the Natural Bridge Falls picnic area where there are tables, accessible paved trails, and interpretative signs that explain the geological processes at play in the area.
From the overlook, you can see the stunning Natural Bridge Falls. During high water, and constrained by a deeply cut chasm, you’ll see the river flow over a 100-foot precipice. Don’t forget your camera, because you will want to take some photos of the spectacle.
At low water, the river used to flow under a natural rock bridge. Unfortunately, the natural bridge collapsed in July 1988, but the falls and the bridge over the Boulder River are still worthy of a visit.
