There are approximately 10 billion legitimate reasons to love Montana, and each of us have our own favorite things about life in the Treasure State. But we’ll also be the first to admit some of our reasons are a little quirkier than others. There are no “bad” reasons to adore Montana – in fact, our state’s oddities are what make it great.
1. We have the best Dinosaur Trail.
The Montana Dinosaur Trail has 13 stops that span the state. It is the result of hard and dedicated work to uncover the truth about our prehistoric past.
2. Montana’s first jail was, ironically, built by a notorious outlaw.
His name was Henry Plummer, and he was Bannack’s sheriff in the 1860s, when he was accused of being the secret leader of a "road agent" gang of outlaws. What can we say, Montanans are a bit rebellious.
3. Speaking of rebellious, Montana is America's black sheep.
4. The Testicle Festival exists.
5. So does the amazing Dumas Brothel Museum in Butte....
6. ... and the rowdy but beloved Miles City Bucking Horse Sale.
7. Montanans are, according to many polls, the most prideful people in the nation.
We can't help it. There's so much to be proud of.
8. We’re pretty sure the phrase "You can’t predict the weather" was born here.
This photo of the Beartooth Pass was taken in June. The weather in Montana will surprise you and catch you off guard, but somehow that makes it even more lovable.
9. There are huckleberry treats everywhere.
You COULD visit Glacier National Park without stopping for a huckleberry shake, but who would want to?
10. We have an actual vortex and House of Mystery.
A vortex is a quantum or gravitational anomaly that may redefine the laws of physics. No big deal.
11. We have the world’s largest steer.
Steer Montanan resides in Baker. In life, he weighed 3,980 pounds.
12. Evel Knievel lived here, and Butte still honors him every year.
Butte's Evel Knievel Days weekend is held every July, and it's amazing.
13. For some reason, people in faraway states seem to think that Montana life is primitive.
By all means, if that rumor lets us keep it to ourselves, then yes. We live in cabins with no electricity and we use pay phones.
It’s really no wonder we have so many reasons to love Montana – the state is highly underrated.
