Every winter, many of us look forward to popular seasonal events like the dazzling light displays, the Whitefish Winter Carnival and various holiday craft shows. But as fun as all those things are, there’s much more to winter in Montana. Don’t let these adventures stay under your radar.
1. Take a snowcoach tour
Have you ever wanted to see Yellowstone in the winter without braving the elements yourself? Companies like Buffalo Bus Day Tours offer snowcoach tours, taking the stress out of winter sightseeing.
2. Check out the Montana Winter Fair
Every year, the city of Lewistown celebrates the farming life... in the middle of winter. This year's fair is January 25-28.
3. Experience Bridger Bowl's Torchlight Parade
Every December 30, Bridger Bowl in Bozeman hosts its annual Torchlight Parade, complete with a torchlight procession and fireworks, from 3:30 - 8 PM.
4. Shop the Missoula Valley Winter Market
Beat cabin fever and stay healthy by shopping the winter version of Missoula's farmers market. The selection is surprisingly good, and the vendor list is impressive.
5. Treat yourself to a sleigh ride dinner
The Lone Mountain Ranch in Big Sky is one of several places offering these unforgettable winter experiences.
6. Go on a beautiful winter hike
If you think of hiking as a spring and summer adventure only, you're missing out on some of our most breathtaking scenery. This is part of the Lava Lake Trail, located near Gallatin Gateway.
7. Learn to ice climb
Feeling adventurous this winter? Hyalite Canyon (south of Bozeman) is an ice climber's playground. Of course, it's best to learn through a guide, so call a company like Montana Alpine Guides to schedule some lessons.
8. Go snowshoeing at Glacier National Park
Most people think that Glacier shuts down during the winter, but in fact, it's a great place to try snowshoeing. On weekends in late January, February and March, the National Park service even hosts ranger-led guided snowshoe walks -- but you're welcome to go on your own anytime.
9. Race a barstool at Cabin Fever Days
Cabin Fever Days have got to be the best way to wrap up a Montana winter, well, ever. Located in Martin City, the event is held in late February and always includes barstool races across the icy snow.
