It may not feel like it quite yet, but spring has sprung in Montana, and it’s only going to get warmer (eventually). You’ve probably got a severe case of cabin fever from winter, so it’s time to get out and explore our beautiful state. We’ve rounded up a great list of spots to check out when you have a free day or two for an adventure.
1. Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum, 38 Tizer Lake Road, Jefferson City
What's spring without a garden stop? Even if you don't have a green thumb, a stroll through
Tizer Botanic Gardens will put you in a spring state of mind.
2. Drinking Horse Mountain Trail, outside Bozeman
Between the views of Bridger Canyon and the Gallatin Valley and the nice, short (2-mile) duration, it's no wonder this is considered one of the
best spring hikes in the state.
3. Garden of 1,000 Buddhas, Arlee
Once the spring thaw happens in Arlee, the beautiful and serene
Garden of 1,000 Buddhas is an ideal place to spend an afternoon.
4. Ross Creek Cedars Recreation Area, near Troy
Every Montanan should see the otherworldly
Ross Creek Cedars , which shows off the unique beauty of Northwest Montana. And mid-late spring happens to be an ideal time to go.
5. Virginia City
Summer is definitely the busiest season (and the most tourist-friendly) to visit
Virginia City , but if you go in the spring, you'll enjoy a much more relaxed experience -- but all the shops and eateries are already open (and of course, the ghosts never leave).
6. Take a ride on the Amtrak Empire Builder
The
Amtrak Empire Builder offers a unique way to see Montana: By train. You'll go from Cut Bank to Libby (or vice versa), and the scenery you'll see along the way is nothing short of jaw-dropping.
7. Miles City
The obvious main attraction in Miles City is the Bucking Horse Sale in May, which every Montanan should experience at least once -- but if the crowds are too much for you, you can always check out
Pirogue Island State Park.
8. The Holland Lake and Falls Trail
There's no better way to spend the first warm spring day than by hiking
Holland Lake. And if you go in the springtime, you'll beat the inevitable crowds.
9. Big Sky
Big Sky is one of our most naturally beautiful towns, and there's never a bad time to go... but in the springtime, when everything is fresh and green, it's especially magical.
10. Stevensville
When was the last time you visited
Stevensville? It's full of small town charm, antiques, and delicious eateries -- and it's a perfect spring break destination.
