Hiking often comes with surprises, whether we cross paths with wildlife or we discover a little-known waterfall. Welch Spring Trail in Missouri leads to the abandoned ruins of a hospital that, more than a century ago, gave those with breathing problems hope. It’s an easy, interesting trek that’s definitely worth following if you’ve got a few free hours.

Welch Spring Trail, in Jadwin, spans just over a mile and is considered easy. If you like quiet when you're hiking, you'll definitely like this trail as it's usually not too busy.

In addition to beautiful scenery, such as Welch Spring, the trail offers an historic tale. Back in 1913, Dr. C.H. Diehl purchased the spring, believing it had healing powers.

He had a hospital built at the mouth of a cave by the spring. Because the cave featured cool air that was free of pollen, Dr. Diehl was confident he could help Missourians and others with breathing issues, including asthma and tuberculosis.

To attract even more visitors, the doctor added a campground, creating what those of us in the 21st century would consider a spa resort.

While visitors would travel from as far away as Oklahoma, the hospital offered little more than the opportunity to breathe the fresh, clean air. The air, after all, had helped cure the doctor's own allergies, so he assumed it would help others as well.

Today, visitors who know about the abandoned ruins make their way to the former hospital to get a close-up look for themselves.

You'll have to cross a natural bridge to reach the ruins, however, so be prepared with sturdy shoes. Even if you don't cross over the spring, you can still see and snap photos of the former hospital.
