With so much natural space, Missouri makes exploring outdoors so easy and so much fun. One of the best places to find adventure is at one of the 92 state parks and historic sites in Missouri, gems that total more than 150,000 acres. With all of those state parks, a few are sure to get overlooked. Wallace State Park may not be as well-known as, say, Ha Ha Tonka State Park or Roaring River State Park, but this beautiful state park in Cameron, Missouri, is certainly just as bucket list-worthy.
Spanning 502 acres in Cameron, Wallace State Park sits less than an hour from Kansas City, making it the perfect day trip destination or an overnight camping adventure.
Arguably the highlight of this cozy state park, the six-acre Lake Allaman draws water lovers during the warmer months, when swimming is popular. If you prefer spending time on the water, go kayaking, boating, or fishing.
The best way to get to know this Missouri state park is on one of its hiking trails. Ranging from easy to moderate, the park’s trails include Deer Run Trail. Wandering 3.1 miles, the scenic trail will take you through wooded areas and over fairy tale footbridges.
Wear a pair of comfy hiking shoes for your trek along the trails, but don’t worry about getting fatigued. There are benches dotted throughout the park, and on the trails, so you can take a breather and enjoy the surrounding landscape.
Bring a picnic along; watch the kiddos on the playground, and consider spending the night. The Missouri state park offers both basic and electric campsites. Reservations are required and can be made up to a year in advance of your visit.
