Have you ever wondered what goes on at an American Air Force base? This summer seize the opportunity and take a tour of Missouri’s only Air Force base. Whiteman Air Force Base is located just two miles south of Knob Noster and was installed on Aug. 6th 1942 in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The base is named in honor of 2nd Lt. George Whiteman, Air Corp, U. S. Army, a Sedalia native who lost his life in the Peal Harbor attack. Today, Whiteman Air Force Base host unit is the 509th Bomb Wing which operates the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber.
Whiteman AFB has nearly 4,000 active duty servicemen who work tirelessly to protect our country.
In addition to the Air Force, the base also has houses Navy, Army and National Guard members. While the base is not open to the public, there are a few opportunities to get up-close and personal with stealth bombers.
