Hartley served in WWII and following the war, he moved to Chicago where he gained experience in working in retail. After working at another store in Oklahoma and getting married to June Spickard, he expressed interest in opening up his own nickel and dime shop. The pair then moved to Branson in 1961 and opened up their own store. The 1, 500-square foot store saw steady growth and in the early 1970's, Hartley moved his shop to a bigger space on Main street. Though Hartley passed in 2006, his wife, son and son-in-law still keep the business running.
