Before there was Walmart, CVS or Walgreen’s, general stores were the heart and soul of small town America. They provided a common ground amongst locals who had to shop for groceries and other household items. Not to mention, most, if not all of them, were family-owned and operated. While many of these general stores have been wiped out by the big-box shops, a few still thrive in small towns today. The First Dawn General Store in Lesterville, Missouri is one of them and has been around for over 100 years.

Before it was renamed, this general store was called, "The Dobbins, Carter & Company General Store." It was established in 1885 and served as not only the first general store in town, but also the first post office, the first place with electricity and a Western Union Crank Telephone and the first bank.

Today, the store is known as the "First Dawn General Store" and draws in locals as well as visitors passing through town.

You'll experience a taste of the good 'ol days as you see candy lined up in jars along the wall. Though they may no longer be a penny a pound, you still can measure them by the pound and load up for the ride home. If you're an antique collector, you're in luck. The store also has nostalgic items from the past that are available for purchase.
