We know that St. Louis is the best city in the world. But how do you explain it to someone who has never called St. Louis home? Each listing below is a part of why St. Louis is the best, but the undefinable essence of belonging to this city can’t be photographed – or explained. If you live here for very long you will find that somehow you became a part of this city. Only then will the amount of love long time St. Louisans have for our great city make sense.
1. We have the best food!
We don't just have great food, we have our own food! Provel, toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, and the square pizza are all St. Louis creations. You might find them offered in other cities, but only in St. Louis can you get the original taste.
2. We are always there to help each other.
During times of flood, or just hard times, the people of St. Louis are always there to help where it is needed.
3. We have world class attractions that are free to visit.
Yes, the Art Museum, the Zoo, the Science Center, and the History Museum are all free to visit. And they are world class destinations, attracting visitors from all over. But what most visitors to these places don't know is that we, the people of St. Louis, fund these venues with our taxes, always keeping them free for everyone to enjoy.
4. Our home town teams are always winners.
We love sports in St. Louis. And unlike other cities, we show up to support our teams even if they are having a down season. The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the best baseball teams ever. Nothing feels more like home in St. Louis than going to a baseball game in Busch Stadium. A pretty close second is watching the Blues play on the ice.
5. St. Louis is a big city that feels like a small town.
St. Louis City, County, and the Greater St. Louis area are huge together. But we are one place, sharing police resources, sports, parks, and of course the rivers. Our shared spaces make us feel as one, while our separate enclaves give us a smaller town feel.
6. We have two great rivers that define us and helped create this amazing city.
The Missouri River and the Mississippi River are a part of the heart of this city. Running across and down our city, they are the reason St. Louis exists today. They are a part of our lives, from just seeing them as we drive to work, to trying to manage way too much water flowing out and into our communities. Sometimes flowing peacefully, sometimes angry, the rivers around us are a part of the soul of St. Louis.
7. We have four full seasons of weather here - sometimes in the same week.
Living here means experiencing the seasons as they were meant to be lived. It is very hot in the summer, winters can bring snow storms that close everything for days, fall is amazing as the trees start glowing with the color changes, and spring is windy, warm and wet. But in true St. Louis fashion we can have all four seasons in a week. It is part of what makes us resilient and what sends us out wearing flip flops and sweaters together.
8. We are loyal and true, to St. Louis and to each other.
St. Louisans are known for not being fair weather fans. In fact, sometimes attendance increases as our sports teams' record declines. The same "let's go cheer them on" idea is true in how most St. Louisans feel about our city. Times can get tough but we are one city, one people. And while we might not agree or even get a long, we keep our difference among ourselves. If you don't live here you really don't need to know. We will work it out and be a better city, and people in the end.
St. Louis has a long history, and we’ve weathered good times and bad. The city is always looking for ways to improve and grow. But it is the people here that make our city so fantastic.
