Fur trader Joseph Robidoux initially took ownership of the land as a trading post, but it soon turned into the city of St. Joseph. During the first few years, it reamined pretty small, but the California gold rush in 1848, drew in many westward travelers passing through.

St. Joseph is home to the place where Jesse James was gunned down by Robert Ford. The one-story, Greek Revival-style, frame home still stands today.
