Few people except to find a space museum in this small Ozark town. Although this museum looks small from the outside, you won’t believe how many artifacts that are featured inside. The Space Museum’s motto is, “Space exploration: touching the past, inspiring the future.” This museum is simply out of this world and you’ll certainly leave feeling inspired. Check it out this weekend!
Bonne Terre, Missouri was once a booming mining community. Today, this little town has less than 7,000 residents and it's certainly not where you would expect to find a world class space museum.
Inside the museum there are over 600 artifacts related to space travel. Check out items from actual space missions and models that were created by NASA engineers.
Although the museum looks small, there is so much to see. Even Russian space exploration is covered. Tour guides are there to help point out artifacts and inform visitors about the history of space travel.
All things space can be found inside these walls. Space themed toys have their own section, it's pretty interesting to see how even our toys have evolved with modern technology.
Recently, the museum was able to expand into a near by building. The Grissom Center, named for astronaut Virgil I. Grissom, and highlights the U.S. space program, from Mercury to the Space Shuttle years. Items that have been in storage for decades are now on display for you to enjoy!
Another really neat experience to catch is a real rocket launch! Every couple of years the museum features a rocket launch at the Bonne Terre Airport. These events typically occur in the summer, so keep an eye on the events section of their Facebook page for any upcoming dates.
The Space Museum is truly a gem. Anyone with a love for space, history, or science will absolutely enjoy spending the day in this small town museum.. Visit them on Friday or Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. or on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
