Every city, village, and small town in Missouri has its own personality. Some, like Hannibal, are known for its famous residents. Others are beloved for their popular attractions, including the wineries in the darling town of Hermann. This one small town in Missouri might have the most murals of any other; even if it isn’t, its murals are absolutely fascinating, and you’ll want to see them in person.
A stroll through the charming town of Cape Girardeau promises a one-of-a-kind experience. After all, this darling town is known for its beautiful murals.
The largest of Cape Girardeau’s murals is the Mississippi River Tales Mural, a 24-panel mural that spans more than 1,100 feet. Created by Chicago artist Thomas Melvin, the mural debuted in 2005.
Make sure you also visit the Missouri Wall of Fame, a mural dedicated to some of the state’s most prominent residents – both those born here and those who accomplished great things here.
Snap photos of the murals of such familiar faces as Mark Twain, Jesse James, and President Harry S. Truman. Sports fans will instantly recognize legendary broadcaster Jack Buck.
Visit the River Campus at Southeast Missouri State University, where you’ll find a mural that pages homage to the steamboat era on the Mississippi River.
Stop by the Vaserling Building (on the side of Fountain Street) to snap photos of Cape Girardeau’s Bicentennial Mural, and simply walk through town to see an assortment of other awe-inspiring murals.
