Animals lovers already know that Missouri is a tiny piece of paradise. After all, we can view wild horses, elk and other majestic animals in their natural habitats. We can visit zoos, animals sanctuaries, and wildlife parks. And, we can plan a day in a state park, like Prairie State Park, where a wild bison herd roams along some of the nearly 4,000 acres of woodlands and grasslands.
Marvel at the pure natural beauty - including the wild bison herd - at Prairie State Park in Mindenmines.
Consider starting your visit to the park at the Regal Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center, where you can learn more about the seasons on the prairie and the bison through interactive exhibits.
The Regall Tallgrass Prairie Nature Center welcomes guests Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November through March, Then, from April through October, visit Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Of course, carve out plenty of time to view the wild bison. The nature center frequently hosts, all year around, a two-mile guided bison hike that will take you over some uneven terrain. (Wear comfy, sturdy shoes whether you plan to go on a guided hike or to hike yourself.)
Brimming with natural beauty, Prairie State Park is also home to 125 bird species, 12 amphibian species, 25 mammal and 25 reptile species, and an estimated 500 plant species.
One day just not enough? Then, reserve a space in one of the campsites. And, if you're just staying for the day, enjoy a picnic in the picnic area that features picnic tables and pedestal grills.
