Pinnacles Nature Park in Sturgeon may just be one of Missouri’s best kept secrets. In addition to providing great bluff top views, the geological features of this park are what make it especially interesting and unique.
Pinnacles Nature Park has a history that dates back 300 million years ago.
Situated between two rivers, the limestone bluffs in this park have eroded over millions of years, to create the unique pinnacles we see now.
Nestled between the Kelley Creek and Silver Fork Creek, the pinnacles continue to be pinched at from both sides.
The jagged rocky formations between these creeks stand 75 feet high and stretch 1,000 feet long. They are comprised of Burlington limestone which is highly reactive to moving water and tends to dissolve over time.
These overlooked craggy peaks are a part of a 77-acre park just 15 miles north of Columbia.
When it comes to hiking in and around Columbia, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park tends to draw in the most visitors. However, drive just 15 miles into Sturgeon and you'll get to experience this geological oddity.
To best enjoy this park, hike the Cat Tail Trail to Attack Hill
Once you arrive at the park, you'll reach the trailhead that starts off of East Pinnacles Road. You'll notice a sign telling visitors that they're on the Cat Tail Trail to Attack Hill. This 1.1 mile trail is rated "moderate" and can be enjoyed year-round. Dogs are allowed, but they must be leashed.
Check out this drone video below for a sneak peak of the park.
