Historic Kimmswick, Missouri is home to only a little over 100 residents, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have plenty to explore. This small town attracts plenty of visitors for its shops, restaurants, and historic buildings. A half-hour outside of St. Louis, you’ll get the sense that you’re stepping back into the past when you stroll its streets. And it’s here where you’ll find a special Kimmswick eatery that’s been serving up delicious country-style cooking for decades – along with towering slices of the world-famous and local favorite Levee High Apple Pie. Welcome to the Blue Owl in Kimmswick, Missouri.
The Blue Owl has been a fixture in Kimmswick since 1985 when Mary Hostetter opened the restaurant after running a highly successful home baking business.
And let’s talk about those meals. The specials board changes daily with a variety of mouthwatering options. A few possibilities could include homemade chicken and dumplings, shrimp tacos, and the ever-popular weekly special, Southern fried chicken.
But save room for the main attraction – the Levee High Apple Pie. Named one of the “Two Best Desserts You’ve Never Tried” by Forbes Magazine in 2018, and one of Oprah’s Favorite Things in 2011, this towering pie features 18 Golden Delicious apples sliced and piled high in a flaky, made-from-scratch crust.
The Levee High Apple Pie was created after a 1993 flood swept through neighboring towns. Volunteers built a 10-foot-high levee to protect historic Kimmswick. Mary Hostetter created the pie in honor of those volunteers.
If you can’t stay long enough for a full meal, at least drop by for a cup of coffee and a pastry – maybe a gooey cinnamon roll (only available on weekends). But be warned, the friendly service and cozy ambiance will make you want to linger.
