Missouri’s certainly not lacking when it comes to urban legends – from the Missouri Monster (Momo) to the Spook Light. We’ve also got our fair share of mysterious roads, some that are even said to be haunted. If you drive down this one mysterious Missouri road, for example, you may experience a strange phenomenon. Some say it’s just an optical illusion while others claim it’s the work of the paranormal. You’ll really have to decide for yourself.
Is there such a thing as rolling uphill? See for yourself whether the gravity hill near Freeman is an optical illusion or if it’s something beyond explanation.
Local legend tells the tragic story of a deadly school bus accident that happened at the bottom of gravity hill in Missouri. Could it be, as some speculate, the spirits of the lost children pushing the vehicles back up the hill?
To find the gravity hill, head south of Freeman to the intersection of Missouri State Highway D and East 299th Street. You’ll know you’re in the right spot, because the highway is paved while East 299th Street is not.
Once you’ve made sure there’s no oncoming traffic, stop your vehicle. Put it in neutral then ease your foot off of the brake. What happens? Your vehicle appears to roll backward uphill.
Most believe that it’s merely an optical illusion, and the vehicle is not rolling uphill. Some people have even rolled a ball on gravity hill to see what would happen. Like the car, it appeared to roll uphill.
Missouri’s not the only state with its own gravity hill. Several other states, including Pennsylvania and South Dakota, have their own mysterious roads.
One Missourian made his way to gravity hill and filmed what happened. Take a peek at the video below. It just might help you decide whether a drive to this mysterious Missouri road is worth your time.
