Absolutely stunning. That’s the only way to describe Meramec Spring Park. Missouri’s own little slice of paradise is located off Highway 44 between Fort Leonard Wood and Mark Twain National Forest.
Meramec Spring Park includes the fifth largest spring in Missouri. What the spring lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty.
Each day, around 100 million gallons of water flows from the spring.
It was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1971.
The park itself encompasses more than 1,800 acres, 200 of which are available for public use.
Fuel up at the park's cafe for your day in nature, or bring a picnic and enjoy it at one of the park's shelters.
The spring was once the site of Maramec Iron Works, which was built in 1843 and closed in 1876. If you go, be sure to check out the ruins.
Throughout its history, the land surrounding the spring has been considered some of the most beautiful in the area.
This is no doubt due to the land's karst topography, which is characterized by abundant springs and caves.
When you're done drooling over the spring, there are plenty of other things to do here. Like any good Missouri park, this one also offers hiking, playgrounds, wildlife viewing and fishing on the Meramec River. You also can feed the fish, so bring some change to buy food!
