Sometimes we just need a few minutes to stop, take a deep breath of fresh air, and marvel at the beauty around us. While we can do that pretty much anywhere we go, we’re also extremely fortunate to live in a state that has its fair share of scenic overlooks. Lovers Leap in Missouri, for example, boasts sensational views that stretch for miles.
Perched atop a bluff in Hannibal, Lovers Leap is a quaint Missouri park that spans just five acres. However, that five acres packs a whole lot of punch when it comes to scenery.
The tiny park also comes with an interesting story about how it earned its name, although no one is sure whether the tale is true. What’s more, you’ll find there are several versions of the tale.
However, the basic story goes something like this. An Indian brave and an Indian princess from opposing tribes fell madly in love. Their love, of course, was forbidden by all.
Still, they managed to spend time together and keep their love a secret until…someone saw them together and informed the Indian princess’s father. The two, knowing that the Indian brave was now a wanted man, ran to the top of the bluff, and…
Clasping each other, jumped off of the bluff to their untimely deaths. The spot has been known as Lovers Leap since 1840, and you can read the entire tale on a historical marker at the park.
