There are all kinds of ghost stories that involve driving down a dark road at night. Any dark road can be a little creepy, but here are some places that may give you a little more reason to be spooked. Imagine these roads at night, and it ups the scare. Unfortunately, night photos of scary roads are either not very clear, or non-existent for the most part. So here are these roads as they look in the daytime. Use your imagination for the rest. Also, I have not “forgotten” Zombie Road (probably the best known), it was just covered in a previous post .

2. The Bride Under The Bridge, Phelps Grove Park, Springfield

Phelps Grove Park in Springfield is known to be haunted by a ghost known as the Bride under the Bridge. According to local legend, a just-married couple lost control of their car at that location, killing them both. Evenings under the park’s third bridge, the bride can be seen holding the hem of her gown, with darkness in place of her face.
3. The Shadow Folk, The Avilla Death Tree, Avilla
Google Maps (Street View)
Avilla is well known for being a haunted place. The Shadow Folk haunt the old abandoned part of this historic village along Route 66. They appear as shadows and can be seen walking along the street and going about daily business, usually from the corner of your eye. In addition, the Avilla Death Tree is said to be haunted by a Civil War-era bushwhacker named Rotten Johnny Reb. It is unknown exactly which tree it is, but it is said to be haunted by the headless ghost looking not only for his head, but also vengeance.
4. 9 Mile Bridge, Auxvasse
Known for being a bridge where black women were once hung and slave children were drowned in the creek below. If you stop your car on the bridge, it is said that it may not start right up again, or if it does, it will be making funny noises. If you sit on the bridge and dangle your legs, you might feel a strange tickling sensation on your feet. Blinking lights that look like eyes have been seen under the bridge and in the surrounding trees, and if you leave your car you might come back to footprints around it and hand prints on the car itself.
5. Upper Blackwell Road, Blackwell
Google Maps (Street View)
Besides possible Satanism at a restaurant located there, many disappearances have also been reported. Also, on a bridge called Black Tram, if you drive over and flash your lights three times a ghost car will chase you away. A sign disappears upon approach and a couple might wave you down for a ride and then disappear when you slow down.
6. Animal Safari Road, Branson
Google Maps (Street View)
Cold chills at night on this road are said to be caused by the ghosts of a wagon train in the past on which many people were killed.
7. Noland Road, Branson
Google Maps (Street View)
After driving down this road off Sycamore Church road and 248 Highway near Branson, people have experienced imprints of saddle blankets and hand prints in the dust on the back of their car.
8. Old Colemine Road, Brookfield
Google Maps (Street View)
A man found on this road who had been deemed a suicide, later concluded due to the location of the bullet wounds that he had been murdered. Another occasion had some teenage kids who found a trash bag full of hound dogs as well as some all over the road and some shot gun shells. Apparently, the dogs had been kidnapped from a nearby home, let loose and shot. However, the kids didn’t see any of this happening on the way to their fishing location, and did not hear any of the shots being fired. The strange thing is that these two cases, though ten years apart were from a shotgun of the same gauge based on the shells. The ghost of a miner who had died in a cave in also apparently haunts the nearby mine shafts and if upon going into the mine you survive the gases, you will be hunted down by the host of the miner. Some believe all of these to be related.
9. Highway Old 213, Higginsville
Google Maps (Street View)
Around ten years ago, a young woman ran off the road into a light pole. At this location, apparently with a highway sign across the street, if you stop your car under it the light will go off, then back on again when you move forward. If you sit at the spot long enough, you might see the figure of the woman on the side of the road, and she may walk towards your window.
10. Route 36, Marceline
Google Maps (Street View)
On an old railroad bridge that crosses Rt 36 near Marceline, witnesses have spotted a misty white apparition hovering above the road, under the bridge or above the bridge. It sometimes will disappear before you get to it, but many have claimed to have driven right through it.
