Cemeteries are traditionally peaceful places, generally silent except for the surrounding sounds of nature and the quiet conversations of those visiting their loved ones. They’re a place where we can seek solace and quiet in an otherwise noisy world. However, some cemeteries have a darker side, at least if you believe in the paranormal, with restless souls wandering away from their graves. This cemetery and barracks, in fact, just might be the most haunted place in Missouri.
Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, which dates back to 1826 and was named after Thomas Jefferson, is the final resting place of soldiers from all wars. The first person buried here, however, was the infant daughter of a soldier in 1827.
The barracks, which include dozens of military buildings, were used by the Union Army during the Civil War. Soldiers were trained here, and there was a hospital on the grounds. Many believe that some of their souls remain to this day.
Both the cemetery and the buildings at the barracks are said to be teeming with the paranormal, with sightings going back as far as the 1920s. If you happen to visit the cemetery, keep an eye out for a little girl who walks among the grave sites. Who she is, no one really knows.
While you’ll likely hear tales of the paranormal at the cemetery, tales from some of the buildings at the barracks are even spookier. Several ghosts, dressed in Civil War garb, have been seen sitting at desks in Building 1.
Those who have worked in Building 29 tell of such strange occurrences as hearing footsteps and toilets flushing – but no one’s around. Perhaps most eerily, a voice – from an entity that’s unseen – shouts out “dismissed” from time to time.
