Appearances can be deceiving and no story proves that truer than that of the Lemp family, the founders of the most popular brewing company in St. Louis. Life had nothing but promise in the beginning, in 1840, and the Lemp Brewery brand dominated the markets until prohibition. Then like dominos, tragedy would befall the Lemp Family, whose spirits are said to remain in the Lemp Mansion in Missouri to this day.
Discover the tragic tale of the Lemp Family when you join a haunted tour of the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, generally held on most Mondays throughout the year. (Additional dates are usually offered in October.).
Built in the mid part of the 1800s, William Lemp Sr. purchased the massive 33-room Lemp Mansion years later and had it transformed into a Victorian-era masterpiece, where he would live with his wife and son, William Lemp Jr.
The Lemp family’s future, however, would be marred by one tragic tale after the other, including early deaths by heart failure and four suicides. William Lemp Sr. was among those who committed suicide.
Prior to his death, however, it’s said that Lemp Sr. had had a love child with his mistress. That boy, who legend tells had Downs Syndrome, was relegated to living locked away on the mansion’s third floor, away from the family’s and the public’s view.
Today, if you join one of the haunted tours of the Lemp Mansion, you may just get a glimpse of the little boy’s spirit. Zeke, as he is called, is still seen playing in the home to this day.
The Haunted History Tour, which is usually offered all year, is hosted by Betsy Belanger, a well-known historian and paranormal investigator. She believes that as many as nine spirits remain in the Lemp Mansion to this day.
Tickets for the Haunted History Tour cost just $25 plus tax. You’ll learn about the tragic lives of the Lemp Family and the history of the Lemp Mansion as you explore the three floors of the mansion.
