Cemeteries provide comfort for those who have been left behind, offering us a way to spend reflective moments with loved ones. Many people, in fact, find solace in the peacefulness that envelops the cemetery grounds. However, some cemeteries, like this haunted cemetery in Missouri, also tell tales of the paranormal, of restless residents who reach out to visitors in frustration, in anger, or from loneliness.
Oak Ridge Cemetery in Kennett appears like just about every other cemetery – manicured grass, graves decorated with flowers and trinkets, and trees dotted here and there.
However, that’s where the differences end. Oak Ridge Cemetery is said to be one of Missouri’s most haunted cemeteries. If you want to experience the paranormal, you’ve got a pretty decent shot when you visit.
Although the cemetery dates back to 1876, the haunting isn’t believed to have started until the 1940s, following the death of cemetery’s female caretaker.
The woman, who most described as a hermit, took her job very seriously, patrolling the grounds of the cemetery each hour throughout the day and into the night. She was determined to ward off any grave robbers.
Upon her return from an evening patrol one fateful night, she was greeted in her rundown home on the cemetery grounds by two men. Her battered body was found the next day.
If you believe local legend, the caretaker had little to no money at her death and, as a result, was buried in a pauper’s grave in the very cemetery she once so determinedly guarded.
However, her spirit is said to still roam through the cemetery. If you visit in the evening, you might just catch sight of her strolling along the grounds, still carrying her glowing lantern.
