Exploring Missouri often gives us a glimpse into the past, sometimes even allowing our imaginations to run wild. Most of us have probably heard of, or maybe even been to, Ha Ha Tonka State Park, home to what was to be a majestic castle. At just under a mile long, the Castle Trail at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, in Camdenton, is an easy ADA-accessible trail that boasts an abundance of natural beauty. (Follow the yellow blaze.)
The highlight of the trail is, undoubtedly, the ruins of what was once Ha Ha Tonka Castle, which was built between 1905 and 1922. Robert Snyder, a well-to-do Missouri businessman, dreamed of building a fantastic castle in this…
...beautiful part of Missouri that would boast dozens of rooms. Unfortunately, tragedy would befall the castle, almost from the very beginning. Snyder was killed in a car accident in 1906.
While his son ensured the castle was completed, it wasn’t the grand building that his father envisioned. By the 1940s, the Snyders leased the castle, which would open as a hotel.
That, too, seemed destined to fail when a chimney fire ripped through the castle in 1942, leaving it gutted. The carriage house that sat nearby was also destroyed.
You’ll probably want to bring your camera along for your hike because, in addition to the castle ruins, you’ll be treated to jaw-dropping views of Ha Ha Tonka Spring and the Lake of the Ozarks.
The trail is also dotted with a dozen benches if you need to stop for a break, or you just want to drink in the view. It also features a grade of a bit over 10 percent, and the entire path is paved.
