There is no mystery behind how Elephant Rocks State Park got its name: the giant granite boulders laid end-to-end like a train of circus elephants. The best way to experience the majesty of these boulders is to take the Braille Trail, an easy, paved trail of one mile. Designed especially for visitors with visual and/or physical disabilities, the trail is wheelchair-accessible and is the first of its kind in the state of Missouri.
The circular interpretative trail winds through the granite outcroppings, bringing you right up to the imposing rocks.
In addition to the braille text, the trail is paved, which makes it wheelchair-accessible, and with a length of one mile, it’s easy for hikers of all skill levels to enjoy.
Another spur trail leads back to the ruins of an old railroad engine house, dating back to the late 1800s, when quarries supplied granite and paving blocks for St. Louis.
