Hollywood Star John Goodman Grew Up In Affton, Missouri

Whether we grew up in the 1980s and early 90s or simply binge shows from that era, most of us have at least heard of Dan and Roseanne Conner, blue-collar parents to three kids in the small Illinois town of Lanford, on the long-running sitcom Roseanne. While Roseanne Barr may headline the popular sitcom, John Goodman has garnered plenty of praise for his portrayal of the loveable Dan Conner. A staple in Hollywood since the 1980s, actor John Goodman was born in the St. Louis suburb of Affton on June 20, 1952. After graduating high school, he played football at Southwest Missouri State University.

Unfortunately, an injury permanently sidelined his football career, so Goodman shifted his career goals to drama. Like many actors before him, he headed to New York City to kickstart his career.

One of his earliest roles was portraying Huck Finn’s dad in the Broadway production of Big River. That was in 1985, and two years later he appeared in “Raising Arizona,” alongside Nicolas Cage.

Goodman, however, became a household name with his portrayal of Dan Conner on Roseanne, which debuted on October 18, 1988. The role garnered Goodman seven Emmy nominations and scored him a Golden Globe in 1993.

The Conner family would return in 2018, and Goodman would reprise his role in the revival of Roseanne. Ultimately, Roseanne would be fired from the show, which would result in the spin-off The Conners, which is on the air as of May 2023.

While TV viewers may know Goodman best as Dan Conner, he’s also racked up an impressive film resume, too, starring in such Hollywood productions as The Flintstones, The Big Lebowski, and Evan Almighty.
