If you’ve ever been to Ironton, chances are pretty good that you’ve passed the Old St. Mary’s Hospital that, after years of tending to its final patient, has been left abandoned as nature threatens to reclaim it.
The neighborhood hospital, which took two years to build, opened in 1926. It was the first hospital in Iron County and would become a neighborhood staple for decades.
Locals sought treatment at the hospital in Missouri for decades when, sometime in the 1960s, administrators decided that it was time to upgrade the facilities to modern standards and to expand to care for more patients.
Despite the changes over the years, the hospital permanently shuttered in 1999. In the ensuing years, it has changed ownership numerous times with talks of restoring and repurposing the building.
The hospital currently remains boarded up. Some ghost hunters, however, have been able to get permission from the owners to explore this long-dormant medical facility.
Tales of the paranormal have crept out of the former hospital. Some locals have told of seeing shadowy figures darting across the lawn and of hearing odd noises coming from the grounds.
While you cannot visit this old hospital in Missouri, you can pass by the grounds and take photographs. Perhaps you may even experience something odd – an otherworldly occurrence, perhaps?
