The Mississippi and Missouri rivers were important for the early settlers of Missouri and many of our oldest towns sit on the banks of these impressive rivers. Spend time in one of the many historic riverfront towns or spend the weekend at either of Missouri’s lake communities. The following are 10 of our favorite waterfront towns in Missouri that we think are picture perfect for a day trip.
Herman sits on the Missouri River and is known for its wineries. Herman is also known for their Maifest and Oktoberfest celebrations. Spend a day in town shopping and have dinner at one of the many nice restaurants.
Washington is a popular stop for those wanting to take the train for a Missouri getaway. Many visitors enjoy the architecture of the old homes and business. Washington has recently revitalized their riverfront district which is now home to many new shops and restaurants.

St. Charles was the original location for the Missouri state capitol. Founded in 1769, St. Charles' historic downtown district is popular among shoppers and diners. It is also a popular area on weekends for drinks and dancing.

Rocheport is a very small town on the Missouri River. With just over 200 residents, this historic river town is known for its shops, restaurants, and winery. It is also a popular stop for bikers on the Katy Trail.
Jefferson City is Missouri's state capitol. Situated on the Missouri River, you can take a tour of the capitol building, explore the haunted penitentiary, or shop in the historic downtown area. Be sure to see the capitol all lit up at night.

St. Joseph is commonly known for being the start of the Pony Express. In the 1800's, St. Joseph was the last stop before entering the wild west. Today, there are many businesses, restaurants, and museums in the downtown area. The riverfront is also a beautiful park that can be enjoyed year round.
Branson, is surrounded by the White River and Table Rock Lake. Branson is a popular vacation spot in Missouri and has great shopping, entertainment, dinning, and outdoor activities.
