If you’re a longtime resident of Mississippi, you probably haven’t given much thought to the state’s Welcome Centers, but maybe you should. Not only do Mississippi Welcome Centers offer a plethora of information about attractions throughout the state, but they’re great attractions all on their own. Like mini museums, each is designed to resemble the antebellum structures for which our state is famous. Read on to learn more about 6 of the amazing Welcome Centers in Mississippi.
The Adams County Welcome Center is a must-stop when in Natchez. Not only is it stocked with free brochures, maps, and resource materials, but it also includes The Natchez Shop, which carries a slew of souvenirs and gifts, educational items, books, t-shirts, and much more. There are also several exhibits, which chronicle the history of Natchez.
A great way to soak up some of Vicksburg’s rich history, the Warren County Welcome Center boasts indoor and outdoor exhibits. It’s also the perfect place to enjoy the area’s scenic beauty since it overlooks the Mississippi River.
You’ll find a wealth of information at this Moss Point Welcome Center. The various displays cover a wide range of state history. In addition to well-preserved 100-year-old Mardi Gras attire, there are carved trees, which have been fashioned from trees that fell during Hurricane Katrina.
There’s no better place to experience true Southern hospitality than this small town Welcome Center. Typically, guests are greeted with refreshments, which sometimes include fresh-baked cookies. And just like all of the state’s other Welcome Centers, the interior is filled with informative info as well as displays regarding the state’s history.
Named one of the 10 most unique Welcome Centers in the U.S., the Washington County Welcome Center is housed in a replica steamboat, which was originally built for the 1984 World’s Fair. Aside from its unique appearance, the Greenville landmark is worth a visit, as it’s filled with exhibits pertaining to the history of the Mississippi Delta.
Like Mississippi’s other Welcome Centers, this one was built to resemble a cozy, Southern home, rather than a typical rest stop. Step inside, and you’ll find an impressive array of antiques, which are primarily from the 1800s. And if the antiques aren’t enough to transport you to the past, the mannequins in period-appropriate attire should do the trick.
The Welcome Centers’ perks also include a couple of outdoor amenities. Boasting neatly manicured grounds with picnic tables and grills, they’re the perfect places to chow down.
