Mississippi is home to countless incredible restaurants, but sometimes all you want is a classic dining experience that takes you on a trip down memory lane. So, today, let’s head to the oldest lunch counter in the state for a mouthwatering meal you won’t soon forget. Dating all the way back to 1870, this restaurant is full of both history and charm. Bring on the nostalgia.
Welcome to Wiedmann’s, a Meridan, Mississippi restaurant that’s nearly 150 years old. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 - more than a century after its doors were first opened — Wiedmann’s has quite the fascinating history, to say the least.
The restaurant wasn’t always found here on 22nd Avenue, though. The restaurant was found in various locations and iterations until 1923 when it moved to its current location.
The restaurant was owned by a member of the Wiedman family until the 1990s, but even though the iconic eatery is no longer in the family and has been renovated more than once in the last 150 years, it’s still a Mississippi landmark.
Today, you will enjoy a "restaurant experience full of surprises and flavors while retaining the comfortable, cozy warmth that has always been a part of Weidmann’s charm," according to the restaurant’s website.
The food is a mix of old and new. For starters, you’ll find everything from fried green tomatoes, smoked salmon, and crab cakes to bruschetta, spring rolls, and
Salads, sandwiches, pastas, chicken, seafood, and steaks round out the lunch and dinner menus, and the restaurant serves an excellent brunch on Sundays.
Though perhaps not what comes to mind when someone mentions "lunch counter," Wiedmann's is a classic restaurant everyone in Mississippi should visit at least once.
Wiedmann’s is located at 210 22nd Ave., Meridian, MS 39301, and is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. For more information, visit their website or follow them on Facebook.
