Enterprise is a tiny little town in Mississippi home to fewer than 1,000 residents. Located just south of Meridian, Enterprise is most well-known for being home to Dunn’s Falls, the tallest waterfall in Mississippi. If you find yourself near Clarke County and looking for a fun-filled day trip, I’d recommend pairing a trip to Dunn’s Falls with Stuckey’s Bridge, a historic bridge in Mississippi. This isn’t just any bridge, though. This one might have a paranormal side to it. Let’s check it out:
When you first come across Stuckey’s Bridge, you might be hesitant to cross it.
Probably for the best, in my opinion. The bridge you see today is actually the newer bridge, completed in 1901. According to Lauderdale County Archives, plans to build a bridge was first drafted in 1847, and was built somewhere around 1850.
This bridge was built by the Virginia Bridge and Iron Company in 1901.
As the story goes, Stuckey owned a nearby inn. As a member of the Dalton Gang, he would rob and murder his guests and then throw their bodies into the Chunky River. The Dalton Gang was a group of outlaws known for their bank and train robberies between 1890-1982.
After murdering 20 people, Stuckey was finally apprehended by law enforcement.
He was hanged from the very bridge that would end up being named after him. Many people have reported visiting this bridge at night and hearing the sounds of loud splashes which are thought to be the sounds of Stuckey falling into the water after his noose was cut. Some ghost hunters have even reported seeing the figure of a man hanging from the bridge, only to vanish when they get closer.
Stuckey isn’t the only one thought to haunt this bridge, though.
Others have seen the ghostly apparition of an older man carrying a lantern along the riverbank. Perhaps an old soul searching for his relative? Or maybe even the ghost of Stuckey himself, stuck in some inexplicable loop where he’s doomed to face his crimes over and over again.
