1. Barq’s Rootbeer was invented in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1898.
Edward Charles Barq invented the famous beverage right here in the Magnolia State.
2. Kermit the Frog is a proud Mississippian, too!
Everyone’s favorite frog is from the small town of Leland, which is also where you’ll find the Kermit the Frog Museum.

3. Pine-Sol was invented in Mississippi.
We can thank chemist Harry A. Cole for this one. He was living just outside of Jackson, Mississippi in a house surrounded by pine trees. He knew that pine oil was both a disinfectant and a deodorizer, so he got to work creating one of the most used cleaning products in the country!

4. The Biloxi Lighthouse has had more female lighthouse keepers than any other lighthouse in the country.
Out of the 91 years the Biloxi Lighthouse was civilian-run, 75 of those years were women.

Yazoo County is the largest and Alcorn County is the smallest.

It’s also the world’s only cactus plantation. It was located in Edwards, Mississippi, though it has since closed down.
7. The first heart transplant happened in Mississippi.
Dr. Hardy performed the surgery at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 1964.
8. That same doctor also performed the first human lung transplant the year before.
