Hippies are probably the last thing that comes to mind when thinking about the Magnolia State. But according to Thrillist, which recently set out to find the hippiest town in each state, Mississippi has its very own hippie haven – and it’s Bay St. Louis. The town’s beachy, laid back vibe, welcoming attitude, and hip art galleries are just a few of the reasons it was selected. Read on to see what else makes Bay St. Louis the most hippie town in Mississippi.
Despite being home to less than 10,000 residents, Bay St. Louis is far from your typical small town.
Residents of Bay St. Louis like to have fun, so festivals and events are the norm. From community races to street festivals, there’s always something to do.
The town even celebrates things like National Poetry Month. This past year, it was celebrated by hanging poems from the fence outside Smith and Lens Gallery and passers-by were encouraged to take the one of their choice.
Weekly fun includes a farmers market. Held every Saturday, from 8 am – noon, the merchandise includes fresh produce, local honeys, jellies, and jams, goat cheese, pecans, and more.
Practically overflowing with small town charm and beachy vibes, Bay St. Louis truly is one-of-a-kind. In fact, according to Thrillist, "the town feels like California got dropped right at the end of the Mississippi River."
