The abandoned Kuhn State Memorial Hospital in Vicksburg has gained a reputation as one of the spookiest spots in the state, but it’s not the only Mississippi medical facility with a paranormal past. The city of Laurel is home to another notoriously creepy hospital – the old South Mississippi Charity Hospital. Despite being closed for decades and practically demolished by a fire, the hospital’s eerie reputation continues to live on. Take a look at these 11 staggering photos and see the abandoned hospital for yourself.
Barely visible from the street because of overgrowth, the hospital is located at the end of First Avenue in the northern part of Laurel. The unkempt property has been abandoned for decades, leaving it to further decay and all but disappear from view.
When the facility first opened in 1917, it was known as the "South Mississippi State Hospital." The name was later changed to the "South Mississippi Charity Hospital."
An extremely important medical facility at the time, it was specifically created to serve the poor and indigent. It consisted of 125 beds and provided a variety of medical services to area residents.
The hospital was closed in 1989, after 72 years in operation. Following its closing, the building was left abandoned, further dilapidating with each passing year.
Rumors of supernatural occurrences at the hospital have been around almost as long as it’s been in existence. During its time in operation, several employees reported witnessing objects moving on their own and hearing strange voices.
The building has been the subject of several paranormal investigations. It’s believed to be haunted by the spirits of two young girls; one of whom died in the hospital when she was accidentally given too much anesthesia.
In the early 2000s, after standing undisturbed for years, the building mysteriously caught fire and partially burned down. The unexplained incident only added to the hospital’s creepy reputation.
Decades of neglect combined with the fire have diminished the structure to mere ruins, but that hasn’t lessened its appeal. Locals still speak of the hospital and consider it one of the most haunted sites in Mississippi.
Those who have visited in recent years claimed to feel as if they were being watched or followed - a feeling that was enhanced while walking down the long hallways within the building.
Almost completely rundown, the hospital isn’t that easy to explore. In fact, it’s not recommended since the structure is unsound and partially collapsing. If you do attempt a visit, use extreme caution.
