In the mood for a little adventure? No problem! Mississippi is full of amazing, unforgettable activities. From biking to dolphin-watching, here are 10 once-in-a-lifetime adventures you can only have in Mississippi.
1. Get up-close views of gators on a swamp boat tour.
Looking for a high speed adventure? Head to the Gulf Coast Gator Ranch in Moss Point, where you can "fly" across 105 acres on an air boat. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for alligators, birds, and other marine life that are known to inhabit the area.
2. Explore the Pascagoula River.
The recently opened Pascagoula Audubon Center is the perfect way to explore the largest (by volume) undammed river in the contingent 48 states. Through interpretive exhibits, hands-on activities, and boat tours, you’ll have a ton of fun learning about the abundance of wildlife and species of plants that inhabit the river.
3. Get muddy.
For the ultimate off road experience, Muddy Joe’s in Kiln is the place to go. The park features miles upon miles of trails and both RV and tent campsites. Don’t have your own 4-wheeler? No problem; you can rent one from the park.
4. See the sights of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
Featuring beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, islands, bayous, nature trails, campgrounds, and historic sites, such as Fort Massachusetts (pictured), the Gulf Islands National Seashore is an explorer’s paradise!
5. Take a Dolphin Watch Tour to Cat Island.
Located in Long Beach, the company Cat Island Excursions offers all sorts of tours, including a Dolphin Watch Tour. The 3-hour excursion will take you to Cat Island’s bayou and beach, where spotting the majestic mammals, and an array of other wildlife, is extremely likely.
6. View rare, wild, and exotic animals.
The Tupelo Buffalo Park is home to nearly 300 animals, and the best way to see them all is a guided tour, which will get you up-close and personal with buffalo, camels, zebras, giraffes, and more. Taking part in a tour also means you’ll have the opportunity to feed the animals, making for an unforgettable experience. There’s also a petting zoo, pony rides, and numerous exhibits.
7. Kayak Okatoma Creek.
Because of the great canoeing opportunities in the area, National Geographic recently named Hattiesburg an "Adventure Town." Check out the magazine’s rating for yourself with a visit to Okotoma Creek. Visit
Seminary Canoe Rental to plan your trip now.
8. Bike the Tanglefoot Trail.
Once a railroad, the Tanglefoot Trail has since been converted thanks to the state’s Rails to Trails program. The 43.6-mile trail will take you on a one-of-a-kind journey through fields, forests, meadows and wetlands, navigating the same paths as the Chickasaws and Meriwether Lewis.
9. Check out one of the tallest cypress trees in the state.
Sky Lake Wildlife Management Area in Belzoni is home to several ancient bald cypress trees that vary in size, with the biggest measuring 47’ in circumference and 70’ in height – one of the tallest in the state. Take in all Sky Lake has to offer via a 1700’ boardwalk or a 2.6-mile paddling trail, both of which navigate the ancient forest.
10. Walk in the treetops.
A visit to Chautauqua Park in Crystal Springs will give you the chance to take in breathtaking scenery and do some serious wildlife viewing. The best part? It can all be taken in from an elevated boardwalk, which provides a "squirrel’s eye" view of the beautiful surroundings.
