All forests are not created equal. Sure, most contain regular, run-of-the-mill trees. But then there are others, like the old growth forest at Sky Lake WMA, which is comprised of some of the oldest and biggest cypress trees in the world. The best part is that there’s a boardwalk trail that winds right through the old growth forest. It’s quite possibly the most underrated trail in Mississippi, and you’ll want to check it out.
There are lots of places to explore the past in Mississippi, and Sky Lake WMA in Belzoni is one of them.
A WMA probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when thinking of historic sites, but Sky Lake isn’t a typical WMA – and that’s because it’s filled with giant, ancient trees.
Some of the oldest trees are estimated to be more than 1,000 years old. And with age, comes size. The oldest cypress tree at Sky Lake is nearly 47 feet in circumference and 70 feet tall.

The best way to see Sky Lake’s huge historic wonders is the Sky Lake Boardwalk Trail.
Suspended 12 feet in the air, the 1,735-foot boardwalk traverses Sky Lake’s cypress-tupelo swamp, affording visitors close-up views of the surrounding forest.
In addition to the boardwalk trail, Sky Lake boasts several other amenities, including a paddling trail, amphitheater, pavilion, restrooms, sign-in kiosk, and a headquarters/educational building.
