Whether due to state pride or just plain denial, here are 12 things you’ll most likely never hear out of the mouth of a Mississippian.
1. “I don’t like fried catfish.”
Fried catfish is basically the official food of Mississippi, so uttering this statement will definitely garner a few confused looks.
2. “I don’t care for tea.”
Sweet tea is often referred to as the "house wine of the south," so this is another one that will be hard for fellow residents to grasp.
3. “My cast iron skillet is rusted.”
Skillets are practically a mandatory tool when it comes to cooking in Mississippi, which means that letting them rust is a major no-no.
4 “I don’t know what the Egg Bowl is.”
More than a game, the Egg Bowl is a state tradition that dates back to 1901. And as such, has become a pretty familiar term among the general public and football fans alike.
5. “I don’t understand why fans ring cowbells/chant ‘Hotty Toddy.’”
Even die-hard fans aren’t sure why they do these things, but that’s not the point. It’s tradition…and that’s all you need to know.
6. “I like the seafood at (insert chain restaurant) better than at (insert locally owned restaurant).”
In a state known for its seafood, no resident would readily admit to preferring (gasp) a chain restaurant to the culinary creations of a local eatery.
7. “I do have a heavy accent.”
Most Mississippians are truly unaware of just how much of an accent they have…that is, until hearing themselves on a recording.
8. “I have no idea where to get some good barbecue/seafood/slugburgers.”
Amazing local cuisine and Mississippi just go together, which means any lifelong resident knows where to get the best of the best.
9. “I’m not a good cook.”
A bad cook in Mississippi is about as common as grits in the north. So, finding a resident to admit this will be extremely difficult, if not impossible.
10. “I prefer northern cooking to southern comfort food.”
Even if this were true (which is very hard to believe) no self-respecting Mississippian would EVER admit to this.
11. “I actually don’t mind going to Wal-Mart.”
One thing most residents have in common is dreading trips to this retail giant, so admitting that you actually like visiting Wal-Mart would definitely surprise some folks.
12. “I don’t make my cornbread from scratch.”
Sometimes, it’s necessary to cut corners, but when it comes to cooking there are some southern specialties that every Mississippian is expected to know how to prepare.
What are some other things Mississippians will never, ever admit? Keep the list going by adding your thoughts in the comments section below.
