13 Things Only Mississippians Know To Be True

When you live in Mississippi, there are just certain things that become common knowledge. And while out-of-towners may not understand some of our ways, it’s okay because they make perfect sense to us. From “Hotty Toddy” to “bless your heart,” Mississippians live in a world all their own….and it’s awesome.

1. Summers are long and HUMID.

2. But with summer comes sno-balls. You know, the ones that are deliciously flavored and often times covered with condensed milk.

3. Whether you’re chanting “Hail State,” “Hotty Toddy,” “Southern Miss To The Top,” (I’m a bit partial to this one) or whatever it may be, college football is a big deal.

4. Fried food is the best kind of food.

5. Speaking of food, gravy isn’t just for dinner.

6. The only way to drink tea is sweet and on ice.

7. You don’t have to go south of the border for hot tamales because Mississippi is known for them.

8. Hunting season is pretty much an actual season.

9. Blessings are important. From blessing food to blessing hearts, Mississippians bless it all.

10. Regardless of how we may be portrayed, we aren’t uneducated! Mississippi State has an awesome research program; Ole Miss is known for their great business and medical schools, so how’d this stereotype even get started?

11. Even our big cities have small town values like hospitality and community.

12. Comeback sauce goes with just about everything.

13. We welcome new neighbors with a casserole (or some other type of delicious, home-cooked food).
