When it comes to iconic Mississippi dishes, there are quite a few, and the po’boy is definitely one of them. The sandwich originated in New Orleans in 1918; although, Mississippian Vincent Rosetti is credited with creating the pressed po’boy, which is a regular po’boy that’s toasted in a heavy grill. A stop on the Mississippi Culinary Trail, this Jackson eatery has been in business since the 1940s. Beatty Street Grocery is most widely known for its burgers, but the restaurant’s po’boys are definitely a top contender.
This restaurant may be a bit off-the-beaten-path but it’s definitely worth the journey. Between the fresh bread and local seafood, it’s easy to see why Taranto’s has been named home of the best po’boy on the Mississippi Coast.

Tucked away in the back corner of this Pascagoula grocery store is a lunch counter that sells some of the best po’boys around. And it’s not just the locals that think so – Bozo’s has been featured in several publications, including USA Today.
As the name suggests, this historic Cleveland building originally served as a grocery store. Since 1992, it has been home to one of the Delta’s most popular restaurants. The fare includes a variety of southern classics, including fried crawfish, shrimp, and catfish po’boys.
Here in Mississippi, we know some of the best food can be found in gas stations, and that’s exactly the case with Fayard’s. Known for their "dressed and pressed" po’boys, Fayard’s is a favorite among locals and has even had a famous patron - George W. Bush.
This local favorite started off as just a small lunch counter in a gas station. Over the years, the location has changed but the great food, which includes mouthwatering po’boys, has been a constant.
O’Neal’s definitely lives up to its claim of being "home of the best shrimp po’boys." From the perfectly fried shrimp to the fresh bread, it just doesn’t get any better.
