A lot of restaurants don’t start off as restaurants – and that’s exactly the case with Scranton’s. The building that now contains the Pascagoula eatery once housed the town’s fire station and city hall, which included a courtroom, jail cell, and vault. And though it’s been a popular restaurant for decades now, there are still plenty of signs of the building’s past. Even better, diners are encouraged to explore the historic building. Take a look:

From the moment you first set eyes on Scranton’s, it’s pretty clear the restaurant has some history.

And that history dates back to the 1880s, when the building that now houses the eatery was built. Pretty significant, the building originally served as the town’s firehouse and then city hall.

Though it’s been a bustling restaurant since 1982, the building has retained some of its original features. The best part is that the restaurant welcomes guests to browse the premises.

You can even take a look inside the old vault. The building’s features aren’t the only signs of the past, though. Antiques and historic photos are scattered throughout the restaurant.
