Here in Mississippi, we are no stranger to natural disasters. From hurricanes to tornadoes to floods – no matter what hits us, we will rebuild.
The state of Mississippi has done so much in terms of educational advances. The state was the first to systemize junior colleges, Mississippi University for Women in Columbus was the country’s first state college for women and Alcorn State University in Lorman is the world’s oldest African American land grant college.

In 1928, Iuka resident H.T. Merrill performed the world’s first round trip trans-oceanic flight.

The first nuclear submarine constructed in the south was built right here in Mississippi.
According to a 2000 census, Mississippi has more churches per capita than any other state. Additionally, Greenwood is home to the largest Bible-binding plant in the country.
The city of Natchez alone is home to more than 500 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Mississippi was the first state in the country to grant married women the right to hold property in their own names. Additionally, the first female mail carrier in the United States was employed in Vicksburg.
