Think movies only get filmed in big cities like Los Angeles or New York? Think again. As surprising as it may sound, more movies than you think are actually filmed right here in Mississippi. Read below to find out which movies brought a taste of Hollywood to the Magnolia State.
1. The Help: Set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960’s, The Help had several filming locations throughout the state including Jackson, Greenwood, Clarksdale, and Greenville.
2. Mississippi Burning: Just like the movie’s namesake suggests, the 1988 classic, which told the true story of three civil rights workers murdered while working in the state, was shot in several locations in central Mississippi.
3. A Time to Kill: Revolving around the story of a father’s revenge, this crime thriller had a total of four filming locations, two of which were Canton and Jackson.
4. The Client: Being that the author, John Grisham, resided in the Magnolia State for a great deal of his life, it seems only too fitting that his movie be filmed here as well.
5. Cadillac Records: Between strong performances from big names like Adrien Brody and Beyonce to unforgettable music, this movie was destined for greatness; and the fact that it was filmed in Mississippi, well, that only adds to its appeal.
6. Walk the Line: Offering an inside perspective on the life of a country music legend, this movie obviously captivated audiences as it won an Academy Award which can be partially accredited to Joaquin Phoneix and Reese Witherspoon’s vocal talents. Now, “Ain't You Ashamed” you didn’t know that?
7. Act of Valor: The 2012 action packed war flick was filmed at Mississippi’s John C. Stennis Space Center. And the fact that the movie was described by Rotten Tomatoes as “a film like no other in Hollywood's history” is definitely something to brag about.
8. O Brother, Where Art Thou?: Adventure, comedy, hidden treasure, George Clooney - seems like the perfect storm (pun intended). Scenes from this 2000 film were shot in and around Canton.
9. My Dog Skip: How could anyone not love a movie about a boy and his dog? This heartwarming film, based on the book of the same name, was based in Yazoo City, Mississippi but was actually filmed in Canton.
10. The Insider: Starting off as a 60 Minutes segment, the true story soon made its way to the big screen. Being that the film stars former Mississippi Attorney General Mike Moore as himself in addition to having several scenes filmed in Pascagoula, it’s only right to give Mississippi props.
Without the great state of Mississippi the world would’ve missed out on some of the best cinematic creations of all time. Turns out the humpback state can add something else to its list of accolades.
