Like a portal into the past, Columbus boasts one of the greatest concentrations of 19th century architecture in the state, making this small town an an amazing day trip in Mississippi for adventurers and historians alike.
Times have definitely changed since Columbus was founded in 1821.
There are a couple of options for touring Columbus’ architectural gems, including carriage rides and double-decker bus tours. Guided walking tours are another possibility.
Inside, you’ll find brochures, maps, and complimentary coffee. As the former house of legendary playwright and Columbus native, Tennessee Williams, the Welcome Center is an attraction in itself and can be toured for just $5.
The town’s historic charm has landed it numerous accolades over the years.
In addition to being deemed one of "America’s Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, it was voted the "Best Small Town Cultural Scene" by USA Today.
There’s more to Columbus than historic buildings and old-fashioned vibes, though.
Columbus is touted as "the city that has it all" – and it really does! Great restaurants are scattered throughout. The town is also home to Lake Lowndes State Park and a popular river walk, so outdoor enthusiasts as sure to be just as pleased with Columbus as history buffs and foodies.
